What it took to make BioShock Infinite

To herald the long-awaited launch of BioShock Infinite, Irrational Games tweeted the above picture. It’s always nice to get perspective on the effort that goes into making a AAA game, which is something that we gamers don’t always know too much about. Sadly, I haven’t yet managed to get my hands on the fruit of Irrational’s labours, but the initial response has been rather positive.

Beyond: Two Souls will hit stores on October 8th, now with more Willem Dafoe; kinda makes me feel like Riverdancing

Warning: if you thought Dafoe looked creepy earlier – and, be honest, you did – Dafoe plus motion-capture markers all over his face is practically nightmare-inducing.

But don’t let that distract you from the main news – we finally have a release date for Beyond! October 8th puts it just before the inevitable holiday madness; which, with any luck, will help it carve out some space for itself in consumer’s minds (and wallets).

UPDATE – CVG has in-game footage of Dafoe doing his thing, which I’ve embedded after the break.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will shiver your timbers October 29th

Well, well, well. Just days after the existence of Assassin’s Creed IV was confirmed – and with two days still to go until Ubisoft’s official “reveal” on the 4th – the above trailer’s been leaked, courtesy of GamesRadar. While the original video has since been pulled from YouTube, we can safely assume that October 29th will see the fourth major entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, just a year after Assassin’s Creed III.

Black Flag stars Edward Kenway, father of Assassin’s Creed III’s charming ne’er-do-well Haytham Kenway. As such, it will almost certainly be a prequel; and, judging by the trailer, naval battles (my favourite part of Connor’s journey) look set to play a prominent role. So far, so good; even if so far, so little in terms of gameplay. It undoubtedly looks pretty enough, a worthy successor to this, this and this.

His official Wiki entry confirms that Edward was an Assassin, an ‘occasional pirate’ (gotta love those New World hobbyists!) and, most importantly, an ancestor of Desmond Miles. Also, in a first for the Assassin’s Creed series, he’s blonde! Who said Ubisoft can’t innovate, eh? (His golden tresses certainly seem to have impressed Blackbeard, given how effusive the bloodthirsty buccaneer’s being with his praise.)

We’ll know more when Black Flag is officially announced on Monday. For a look at the box art and a spoiler-filled analysis on what all of this could mean, man, click on past the break.

Grand Theft Auto V delayed until September

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo - heythatsalmostexactlyoneweekaftermybirthday - oooooooooooooooo..................

To the wailing of infants, the beating of breasts and much gnashing of teeth, Rockstar today announced that GTA V will release on September 17th, 2013. Originally scheduled to arrive in stores this spring, this significantly pushes back the launch of what is easily my most-awaited game of 2013. Not that I’m taking this personally, or anything. YOU $%@#$%@$#%#$!

In other news, reports that the Rockstar executive who made the announcement looked like this are yet to be confirmed.

No need to worry, Aliens: Colonial Marines brought enough testosterone for everyone

When the lead writer for a game hastily distances himself from a promotional trailer, it’s almost certain that it might not be in the game’s best interests. After watching the eloquently named ‘Kick Ass’ trailer, it’s also clear that whoever wrote that voiceover subscribes to the Samuel L. Jackson school of narrative (it’s the one that says ‘bad motherf*****’ on it). This may yet be intentional parody – for the game’s sake, I certainly hope so, because what we’ve seen so far looks pretty good indeed.

How I learned to stop worrying and love Dark Souls

Well, they DID say 'prepare to die' right on the box.

For those of you who were wondering how exactly I spent my holidays, this was pretty much it. Dark Souls is one of the more notable titles in my Hall of Shame, and I thought I might as well chalk this one off the list during the festive season. I thought that a gripping cinematic RPG was just the ticket for me to unwind after a frenetic pre-Christmas release schedule, and it would be the perfect way for me to let off some steam.

Boy, was that a bright idea.

In Metro: Last Light’s Russia, there are no Sundays

A weary Russian voice reading the opening to ‘Genesis’ isn’t the usual soundtrack for a game trailer, but it sure works for Metro: Last Light. I’m itching to step back into Artyom’s shoes, and this trailer doesn’t help. Metro 2033 is one of the more underrated games of the past couple of years; let’s hope that Last Light can polish up that legacy a bit. Speaking of which, I’d be remiss if I didn’t inform you that you can snag yourself a free copy of Metro 2033 simply by liking this Facebook page. (and I highly recommend you do so!)

Bonus reading – over on Kotaku, Jason Schreier’s written an article titled ‘Thirteen Things You Should Know About Metro: Last Light‘. One of his observations made me laugh out loud, and I’m going to quote it here in the hopes that it’ll convince you to head on over and have a look:

8. In the bar, your character can sit next to a homely, somewhat overweight woman. As you drink, she’ll get skinnier and more attractive. Classy!

And finally – how about that box art, eh? I quite like it!

What I thought about the VGAs 2012

VIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCTTTTOOOOOORRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYY!

A picture of Johnny Drama’s gotta be worth at least a billion words, but I shall try to elaborate nonetheless. Here’s what I thought about:

The Walking Dead winning Game of the Year

See above picture. Seriously, if XCOM wasn’t it, this is the only GOTY winner I’d have been happy with. It’s a testament to the sheer quality and emotional impact that Telltale managed to pack into their stellar game. To put this victory into perspective, here’s a list of the publishers of the last 3 winners – Bethesda Softworks (subsidiary of ZeniMax Media), Rockstar Games and Sony Computer Entertainment, I think it’s safe to say that those are some pretty big fish.  Telltale made and published The Walking Dead, all off their own bat; and now, their name’s up on that list, deservedly so. For this achievement, they also won Studio of the Year, and I don’t think anybody would begrudge them that.

XCOM Enemy Unknown winning Best PC Game

XCOM was my personal pick for Best PC Game and Game of the Year, so I’m pretty happy that it picked this one up. I’m glad it’s gotten the recognition it deserves, even if it hasn’t quite managed the appropriate sales yet. Still, Take-Two’s happy, calling it a ‘commercial success’; and, if that means a sequel, so am I.

More after the break.

Spike Video Game Awards 2012 – and the winners are…

There’s always a certain amount of skepticism about the Spike VGAs, as there will be about any gaming awards that try to blend recognition with as much spectacle as this. And I don’t think anybody besides Spike themselves would disagree that the world would be a better place with fewer celebrities pretending to be obsessed with games. (It’s just awkward for everyone, really.)

I’ve been skeptical myself, but not this year. Why?

Because The Walking Dead won Game of the Year.

Once you recover from your shock/happiness, click on past the break for the full list of winners. Trust me, you’ll want to.

Everything you need to know about Far Cry 3

I’m currently waist-deep in Far Cry 3’s single-player campaign, and I’m loving every second of it. If you’ve yet to be convinced, however, Ubisoft’s latest trailer should get you off the fence. Clocking in at just over 10 minutes, ‘Revealed’ brings you up to speed on just about every aspect of Far Cry 3’s gameplay and story.

For those of you who prefer to head into a game with no knowledge of the setting or what might be in store, you should steer clear of this one. Those of you looking to get some info on Rook Island before you dive in, you’ve come to the right place.
