Look, EA, DICE, whoever – I’m willing to buy that Battlefield 4’s spec ops dudes have been throwing themselves off buildings for years, until they’ve built up an immunity towards fall damage and can treat a collapsing factory roof as nothing more than a mild annoyance. I can also believe that – in a touching homage to those fallen G.I. Joes at the back of the cupboard – these fine soldiers now come with detachable limbs that can be severed with merely a flick of a (friendly) knife, thus making battlefield – hah – surgeries but a moment’s work.
But do you really expect me to believe that these men, these highly trained professionals, can’t turn a goddamn radio off?
That’s the sort of rookie mistake that Call of Duty wouldn’t make, you mark my words.
To herald the long-awaited launch of BioShock Infinite, Irrational Games tweeted the above picture. It’s always nice to get perspective on the effort that goes into making a AAA game, which is something that we gamers don’t always know too much about. Sadly, I haven’t yet managed to get my hands on the fruit of Irrational’s labours, but the initial response has been rather positive.
As Game Informer just revealed, the Thief series will be rebooted in 2014 on PC and next-gen consoles. Rumours of a sequel in the widely revered stealth series have been swirling around for a while, now, but Eidos Montreal’s decided to start afresh.
Series hero Garrett returns to the Gothic, industrial metropolis known simply as the City to steal any and everything that will make him richer. Unfortunately, the City is broiling with social tension as it is ravaged by a plague and lorded over by a political tyrant known as the Baron.
So, Garrett returns (is anyone else getting a Raziel vibe from the above picture, though?) and it looks like they’re not messing with the setting too much either. Let’s just pray that they leave those goddamn moss arrows out of this one.
Well, well, well. Just days after the existence of Assassin’s Creed IV was confirmed – and with two days still to go until Ubisoft’s official “reveal” on the 4th – the above trailer’s been leaked, courtesy of GamesRadar. While the original video has since been pulled from YouTube, we can safely assume that October 29th will see the fourth major entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, just a year after Assassin’s Creed III.
Black Flag stars Edward Kenway, father of Assassin’s Creed III’s charming ne’er-do-well Haytham Kenway. As such, it will almost certainly be a prequel; and, judging by the trailer, naval battles (my favourite part of Connor’s journey) look set to play a prominent role. So far, so good; even if so far, so little in terms of gameplay. It undoubtedly looks pretty enough, a worthy successor to this, this and this.
His official Wiki entry confirms that Edward was an Assassin, an ‘occasional pirate’ (gotta love those New World hobbyists!) and, most importantly, an ancestor of Desmond Miles. Also, in a first for the Assassin’s Creed series, he’s blonde! Who said Ubisoft can’t innovate, eh? (His golden tresses certainly seem to have impressed Blackbeard, given how effusive the bloodthirsty buccaneer’s being with his praise.)

To the wailing of infants, the beating of breasts and much gnashing of teeth, Rockstar today announced that GTA V will release on September 17th, 2013. Originally scheduled to arrive in stores this spring, this significantly pushes back the launch of what is easily my most-awaited game of 2013. Not that I’m taking this personally, or anything. YOU $%@#$%@$#%#$!
In other news, reports that the Rockstar executive who made the announcement looked like this are yet to be confirmed.
And while he may not have much to say due to his lofty location, he can afford to let his world speak for itself, because would you look at it?! Gorgeous was the first word to spring to mind, but it hardly does Owlboy justice. And that’s without taking into account the music, which is quite awesome in its own right. It’s not often a game goes from ‘I’ve never heard of that’ to ‘OMG when is this coming out?’ in the space of a single trailer, but Owlboy’s managed it as far as I’m concerned. Watch this!
Hipsters all up in my SimCity? Never thought I’d see the day. Still, this is pretty cool – Ocean Quigley, Creative Director at Maxis, recently took to his blog to show off the variety of filters you can implement in your SimCity game. The filters range from ‘Juicy’, seen above, to my personal favourite, ‘Black & Red’, which you can see after the break. Apart from looking pretty cool and allowing you to customize your SimCity experience just the way you want it, these filters also make SimCity more accessible to colourblind gamers, as Kotaku points out. And that’s worthy of applause in its own right.

If, like me, you’re still bathed in the warm (rocket-fueled) glow of nostalgia from yesterday’s Quake 3 love-in, then you’ll probably enjoy this video as much as I did. It’s always fun to watch just how far dedicated players can push a game’s boundaries, and stuff like this is a large part of why Quake 3’s still going strong 14 years after release.
When the lead writer for a game hastily distances himself from a promotional trailer, it’s almost certain that it might not be in the game’s best interests. After watching the eloquently named ‘Kick Ass’ trailer, it’s also clear that whoever wrote that voiceover subscribes to the Samuel L. Jackson school of narrative (it’s the one that says ‘bad motherf*****’ on it). This may yet be intentional parody – for the game’s sake, I certainly hope so, because what we’ve seen so far looks pretty good indeed.
The beauty of Quake 3, and the reason it still enjoys a fanatical following today, lies in its simplicity. No matter how elite the opposition, you always felt like you had a chance; that you were only ever a respawn away from having things just click into place for you, like long-range rockets on Q3DM17.
And then you got railed/humiliated/gibbed.
Still, that glorious simplicity meant that hope sprang eternal, and you just had to keep coming back for more. Considering some of the luminaries I played with, I was usually little more than a free frag (think guppy in a pond of piranhas) but the temptation of hearing those wonderful words – YOU HAVE TAKEN THE LEAD – was irresistible.
Over on GamesRadar, David Houghton calls Quake 3 ‘one of the greatest games ever made‘; and, I have to say, the man’s got a point. Check it out!
