For You, My Friend, Special Price – it’s not paranoia if Steam’s really out to get you

To prepare for his now-legendary portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger locked himself in a hotel room, scribbled down what he imagined the Joker’s schizophrenic thoughts might sound like, and spent hours practicing that chilling voice and laugh. Luckily, you won’t have to go to quite those lengths to get a taste of insanity – Steam’s got Amnesia: The Dark Descent at 75% off all day! They’ve got other titles on sale as well, but nothing else that will guarantee you a couple of weeks of sleeping with the lights on.

For You, My Friend, Special Price – why, Steam, why?

Out of deference to my readers’ bank balances, I have hitherto refrained from posting about the Steam Summer Sale and the vast range of goodies therein. That forbearance ends today, and you’ll thank me for it.

Company of Heroes and Limbo are available at $2.49 each. In case you’re not counting, that’s two and a half dollars for two games that redefined their respective genres – Company of Heroes for real-time-strategy, and Limbo for little-boy-creepiness (to be fair, it managed to be both incredibly creepy and incredibly awesome – which is pretty much the dream, isn’t it?)

Go forth and spend, my son.

For You, My Friend, Special Price – say hello to the Steam Summer Sale, goodbye to financial solvency

It’s that time of year again.

All that money can’t really be good for you, anyway.

For You, My Friend, Special Price – Tropico 4 free on Steam this weekend

Have you always had a sneaky feeling that you were born to be the dictator of a delightful Caribbean island and have your loving/terrified subjects call you El Presidente? If so, I don’t even know where to begin with you…but here’s some good news. Tropico 4 is free to play on Steam this weekend; and, should you acquire a hankering for the autocratic lifestyle, it’s also discounted to $13.59 (along with all other Tropico titles and DLC) until Monday. For fullest effect, remember to cackle villainously as it downloads.

Wolfenstein 3D is 20 today; doesn’t that just make you feel old

Achtung, baby.

Here’s to the rather-unfortunately-nicknamed William “B.J” Blazkowicz, the granddaddy of bad-ass protagonists. He was shooting Nazis (in a first-person perspective, too!) before it was cool.

Before I get all teary-eyed here, let me just say that Wolfenstein 3D turns 20 today; and how better to celebrate than by making it available for everybody to play through their browser? That’s right, the shooter that started it all for so many of us is now just a couple of clicks away; the first of which can be found right here. Now, I’m just going to huddle in a corner and contemplate my incipient mortality, but you should click on past the break to see a developer’s commentary video of Wolf 3D narrated by John Carmack himself; as well as Wolfenstein’s original DOS box art in all its glory.

For You, My Friend, Special Price – Morrowind & Oblivion half off on Steam

Are you burdened with an over-abundance of free time? Is all that liberty getting to you? Salvation is at hand, friends, as Steam has announced that The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion will be available at a 50% discount for the rest of the week! For a little under $20, you’ll be getting the Game of the Year editions of these two venerable RPGs, as well as the perfect excuse to not talk to anybody for weeks on end.

If you’re the suspicious sort who believes that things that sound too good to be true usually are, worry not – there is a reason for this alarming generosity; it serves to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Morrowind. There, isn’t that nice? (Also, kudos re: the paranoia; you’ll probably outlive the rest of us.)
